Ula Sickle

Ula Sickle is a choreographer and performer who lives and works in Brussels. A multi-disciplinary artist, she works regularly with visual artists, contemporary musicians and architects. Her work explores choreographic forms that reveal the cultural codes and political power of folk dancing.

Her quest for an alternative to the canons of contemporary dance led her to meet performers who embody other histories of movement: she has worked with performers from the Democratic Republic of Congo (Solid Gold, 2010, Jolie, 2011, Kinshasa Electric, 2014), with Marie De Corte, a self-taught dancer almost 60 years old (Extreme Tension, 2012), and the singer and performance artist Stine Janvin Motland (Prelude, 2014).

The visual dimension of her performances, especially the use of light, occupies a central position in her video works Looping the Loop (2009) and Atomic 5.1 (2010), and in her Light Solos (2010-2013), optical pieces created with the sound artist Yann Leguay. With the visual artist and Dj Daniela Bershan, Ula Sickle has presented Extended Play, a new piece for five performers, presented at Kunstenfestivaldesarts 2016 and co-produced by KVS. Her work is supported by, and has been presented at, the Kunstenfestivaldesarts (Brussels), the B.O.M. Festival (Seoul), the KVS (Brussels), the Kaaitheater (Brussels), the Nowy Teatr (Warsaw), Tanz im August (Berlin), Moving in November and The Zodiak (Helsinki), the Zürcher Theater Spektakel (Zurich), and the Rencontres Chorégraphiques Internationales de Seine-Saint-Denis (Bagnolet, France).
