Sanctuary

Brett Bailey

French Premiere theatre

Coproduction

Le Cap l duration : 35'

A labyrinth that is also a refuge or a maze that is also a prison? This show designed by the South African director Brett Bailey explores the notion of sanctuary. A fictional work based on testimonials, it evokes the states of uncertainty experienced by people seeking refuge in Europe today.

without borders Focus on Africa

Once the audience have stepped over the threshold of Sanctuary, the doors slam shut behind them. When they’ve regained their composure, they walk through a maze made up of several scenes involving European citizens, migrants, or refugees in Marseille, Hamburg, Athens, etc. A group of professional and amateur performers invites the audience to listen to stories told by men and women who, like them, have experienced the same situations. For this new work, Brett Bailey has collected numerous testimonials from people in exile living in shelters, waiting to live out their dreams elsewhere. Brett Bailey and his team have used this material to create eight humanistic scenarios that speak with great sensitivity of a continent struggling to cope with the challenges of contemporary exile.
