Boris Charmatz is well known for taking dance into unconventional spaces. After presenting the unforgettable 10000 gestes at the Festival de Marseille in 2018, he is now an associate artist for the 2019 season at the Mucem. Here he celebrates twentieth century dance, taking us on a journey with twenty performers who act as our guides, allowing us to construct our own ‘museum of dance’. As our master of ceremonies, Charmatz gives free rein to the performers while creating a meticulously composed script that ranges from “Charlie Chaplin to Beyoncé, and from the pioneers of German dance to the French choreographers of the eighties and nineties”. We cross paths with Isadora Duncan, William Forsythe, Merce Cunningham, Pina Bausch, Dominique Bagouet, and Mickael Jackson. This ephemeral collection is presented in a setting that is neither a stage nor a performance space.
