For Julien Gosselin and Aurélien Bellanger, the end of the Millennium in Europe was marked by the creation of two cross-border tunnels. The first is CERN, on the French-Swiss border, a tunnel containing a huge particle accelerator. The second, the Channel Tunnel, erases the strip of water that cuts Europe in two, creating a symbolic continent. Once seen as miracle solutions, these tunnels have become the focus of insoluble problems of cooperation, the latest episode being the “Jungle” in Calais. It’s as if these territorial perforations have thrown the flow of people and goods into disarray. Could the myth be over?
