Ivan Cheng is an Australian artist who creates videos, objects, paintings and publications that form the basis for complex, precarious performances. Here, he filmed three actors from different generations − Meg Harper, Aaron Kahn and Magdalena Mitterhofer – who relate to the theatre in different ways. Combining theatrical technique with “wiccan” witchcraft, the interviews and monologues, dealing with possession, incarnation and power, channel different degrees of fantasy and illusion. In the performance that marks the opening of the exhibition, speaking both to the camera and the audience, Ivan Cheng plays the character Nancy Downs, whose hunger for power leads her to misuse the magical powers she receives.

Ivan Cheng
The new video installation by the multi-disciplinary artist Ivan Cheng draws its inspiration from the cult horror teen movie The Craft (Andrew Fleming, 1996) and responds to young people’s desire for revenge. The three characters presented on screen will be joined by a fourth, Ivan Cheng himself, for a performance piece.
