The murder of a former Mapuche student activist and farmer inspired Lemi Ponifasio to create this piece which, once again, defies and transcends conventional ideas of theatre, dance and activism, dealing, like all his work, with “questions of identity and destiny, people and nature, womanhood and the balance of power”. While the aesthetic is sophisticated and the presentation highly visual, the message is deeply political, rooted in the reality of the Mapuche community, which suffers from abuse from the Chilean authorities and harm due to climate change. The artist reiterates his commitment to indigenous peoples via this intense piece created with the dancer Natalia Garcia-Huidobro and the singer Elisa Avendaño Curaqueo. A sublime fusion of art and politics, darkness and light.
