Bach Nord
For Marina Gomes, hip-hop culture and community engagement are inseparable, as shown in Bach Nord, created in response to Cédric Jimenez’s controversial film BAC Nord. With a Bach-inspired soundtrack composed by Arsène Magnard combining guitar, drill and shatta, the piece deconstructs clichés without shying away from real-life situations, violence and different kinds of segregation and imprisonment. Once again, the choreographer showcases the talent of young people, especially high school pupils from the 3rt, 13th,14e and 15th arrondissements of Marseille, who spent a long time taking part in workshops with dancers from Gomes’s company, Hylel. She offers a nuanced view of the lives of youths who witness urban reality from close quarters and invites them to transcend that reality. They have taken part in a powerful artistic and aesthetic project with which they can truly identify.
Asmanti
Marina Gomes’ dance piece Asmanti [Midi-minuit] is like a movie shot in her neighbourhood: a group of youths finding their way through the concrete jungle and its “red zones” where they have to live with the constant threat of violence. They are connected to one another by a vital energy that drives and fires their bodies, and share in a collective performance that borrows its codes from hip-hop, contemporary dance, street culture and film. The entire show is rooted in real situations, reinvented here in a choreography that combines minimalism and physicality and is both abstract and theatrical. From immobility to exhaustion, the five dancers express a multitude of sensations and emotions in the fading light.
