Alice Ripoll

The work of the choreographer Alice Ripoll, who lives in Rio de Janeiro, embraces contemporary dance and a range of Brazilian urban dance styles such as passinho, dancinha, voguing, samba, hip-hop, Pisadinha and Brega Funk. She uses dance to open up a space in which dancers can turn their personal experiences and memories into images. Alice Ripoll is director of two groups: REC and SUAVE.

Alice Ripoll initially studied to be a psychoanalyst before branching off into dance as she was interested in exploring the possibilities of research into body and movement. She graduated from the Angel Vianna School, an important centre for dance and motor rehabilitation, and began to work as a choreographer. She has directed many pieces, dancing in some of them, and has also worked with actors and circus performers.
Her shows have been presented at several venues and festivals in Brazil (Festival Panorama, the Biennale SES de Dança and the MIT) and abroad (Kampnagel - Internationales Sommerfestival, Zurich Theater Spektakel, Noorderzo Performing Arts, Rencontres Chorégraphiques Internationales de Saine-Saint-Denis; HAU, Kunstenfestivaldesarts, Pompidou Centre and Wiener Festwochen).
