A leader for West African counter-culture, Fela Kuti made his music into a political weapon. His afrobeat partly accompanies this piece on the immense desire for freedom among young people in Burkina Faso today. On stage, six dancers are dragged from their torpor by a seventh who is unable to stop their frenzied movements, a metaphor for their hunger for life. He ends up joining them in their frantic dance, soon driven by rock beats from the DJ and percussionist Yvan Talbot. Enchanted by the hypnotic charm of the show, the Place d’Armes at Fort Saint-Jean starts to feel like the “Shrine”, the legendary venue halfway between a temple and a nightclub, where Fela sang of hope and revolt after praying with his audience.
